Of all the titles she’s held, “Grandma” is the one that Hillary Clinton cherishes most.
In an exclusive cover story interview for the latest issue of Us Weekly, the former First Lady, New York Senator and Secretary of State opens up about how her 18-month-old granddaughter, Charlotte, has inspired her current presidential campaign — as Us Weekly‘s Christina Garibaldi and Ian Drew discuss in the video above.
“Having this wonderful little person in your life makes you think about the future in a whole new way,” the Oval Office hopeful, 68, tells Us of 36-year-old daughter Chelsea’s first child with husband Marc Mezvinsky.

“Being a grandmother is the most amazing experience. And, of course, when you have the most amazing 18-month-old granddaughter, it’s even better,” the Chicago native continues. “I arrange my campaign schedule around seeing Charlotte, and one of the highlights of the last year was getting the chance to have Chelsea, Marc and Charlotte on the campaign trail with me.”
When Clinton and her husband, Bill Clinton — who, of course, served as the 42nd POTUS from 1993 until 2001 — are miles away from Charlotte, the political pair keep in touch with the tiny tot via FaceTime.
“When we can’t be together, I’m grateful for technology — we share photos and videos,” the Wellesley College and Yale Law School graduate explains to Us. “These days, she calls me ‘Grandma’ and Bill ‘Pop Pop.’ We just can’t get enough of her.”
In September 2014, Bill took to Twitter to share the couple’s excitement over first-time grandparenthood. “Charlotte, your grandmother @HillaryClinton and I couldn’t be happier!” he wrote. The Clintons will welcome their second grandchild this summer, as Chelsea is pregnant and expecting another baby with Mezvinsky, 38.
Clinton also spoke with Us about her celebrity support from stars such as Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, her favorite ways to relax while on the campaign trail and her thoughts on possibly becoming the first female President of the United States.
